Delta puts tough times behind her as she starts to move on

SINGER Delta Goodrem has spoken out about the breakdown of her engagement to Brian McFadden, saying she had been through some "tough times."

Goodrem, 27, told the Sunday Herald Sun she had emerged from a difficult year and her new single, Sitting on Top of the World, was exactly how she was feeling right now.

Her first single in five years will be released on Friday and is a positive, uplifting song that she said mimicked her mood.

Last year was a rollercoaster for Goodrem. Following the breakdown of her long-time enagement to McFadden, she had a brief relationship with American singer Nick Jonas, and has returned to Australia to work on a new Channel 9 show, The Voice.

During her break-up with McFadden she took some time to stop and think.

"I think everyone goes through changes, and every decision I've made has been one from my heart," she said. "I'm so happy where I am at with my life right now.

"But definitely I had some tough times, there is no denying that.

"It took me a second to stop and think, but I had to make better changes for my life and I was in a place I needed to move on from.

"I have now, and I'm really proud of myself for that."

McFadden himself has moved on - and is engaged to model Vogue Williams, part of the cast of the new series of Dancing With the Stars.

Goodrem said she had no ill-feelings towards either McFadden or Williams.

"I'm so happy and so thankful to be free as a person," she said.

"I'm at such peace, I don't remotely feel anything bad. I only wish them well.

"I'm getting to do The Voice, I'm doing my music, I'm myself again.

"I want to be a young 27-year-old, loving music, that's me. That is who I am and I didn't get to be me for a second."

It's 10 years this year since Goodrem burst on to the Australian music scene with her single Born To Try and album Innocent Eyes, which broke all records.

At the height of her success in 2003 she was diagnosed with and successfully fought Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Now based in Los Angeles, where she has bought a home in the Hollywood Hills, Goodrem is surrounded by a close group of friends including Aussie television presenter Renee Bargh and long-time music collaborator Vince Pizzinga, who is also her housemate.

Everything is in the right place and that's why now is the time to release new music.

"I feel like I've grown up," Goodrem said. "It's really interesting, because now I know what it is like to have grown up."

Goodrem will be in Melbourne on Friday at a performance and signing at Westfield Plenty Valley and then will perform at the Logie awards next Sunday night at Crown casino.

I think my favourite part of the article is when she says that she wants to just be young and love music. I'm glad she's focusing on herself and is in a good place.

I wish she would've been more open with the fans during the long wait about what's going on, not to such detail but just say "Things in my life has changed significantly of late which has forced me to re-consider and take time to assess where I want to take the next album" or something like that. The fans are here to support her! At the end of the day we're the ones still left from the beginning. I hope she realises that...But I can understand if she feels like she has to put a guard up after being hurt by some people (if that was to be the case). So good to see her happy again. I can tell already from the new single and video clip that she seems so much more grown up.

I'm really pleased that delta has come out of all of this happier and in a better place for it all, I think it must have been a really tough and upsetting time for her with a lot of heartbreak. I'm just glad to see her happy and feeling herself again

It may be that some of the hurt came from the fans....remember we weren't all exactly supportive when Delta started dating Nick. And the media weren't either. It would've been a pretty rough time for her, since it seemed Brian was getting all good press and people were slagging her off. Not really fair.

I also think it's just a question of realising that there is a distinct line between her and the fans - just because we are fans it doesn't mean we're entitled to know everything about her life. She is still her own person who can make her own decisions without having to inform us. That's fine with me - I'm a fan of her as a person and an artist, but I don't need to know every reason for every decision. A bit more communication during the last 12 months would've been great, it's true, but given what we know now, it's understandable she didn't want to share as much. She was dealing with enough already.

I agree, we don't need to know everything, I don't care about personal life, but I think we're entitled to receive communication regarding the progress of the music over a period of time. Just keep us in the loop a little. I didn't think the Delta & Nick relationship would last due to conflicting working schedules as well as their different stages of life. I must say we can thank Nick for helping Delta through some of the tough time and writing music with her to keep the music flowing. I think he made her happy and that's all you'd want for her I guess. I'm talking like I know everything but I don't but I think she's in a much better place now mentally and it's all systems go from here

Oh, I know, and what I said was a big generalisation; I was one of those critics, though, so I know they were out there. But after what I just read, it's understandable she didn't want to talk as much, she wanted to be more guarded. It was sort of the same thing after Mistaken Identity.

I think it's interesting that Delta has almost come full circle....it's ten years after Innocent Eyes and again she's about to appear on a major TV show with musical capacity and about to release a new single and album. I find that really cool.

I think it is obviously difficult for fans who support an artist but feel that disconnection. I mean, after the split with Brian what we saw was a seemingly happy Delta going to lots of nice places and doing lots of great things - but there wasn't much about the music.

It's not difficult to imagine that what we saw wasn't really what was going on in Delta's life... It is so easy to forget that she would have been going through a pretty tough time when that isn't communicated to us.

I know a lot of us, including me, have moaned to hell and back about this wait and it has mainly been because of the lack of transparency and the false-starts. We are not entitled to know what's going on, but it is hard to remain entirely supportive through what felt like a drought.

It is a difficult situation - for if there had only been a little bit more communication about what was going on then we fans would have been in a much better place to be supportive, but that communication may have been detrimental for her emotional position in the long run. I think we can all appreciate that Delta more than anyone should make sure that she's enjoying her life and taking the time to do that - she battled Cancer when she was 18, that's bound to skew your perspective!!

I'm glad that she's opening up about it now and hopefully from here on out we can all enjoy the era alongside Delta.

Ditto. I left this forum for a while because at one point, all most people seemed to do on here was complain and moan about the new album not being out yet and her being with Nick. I really hope Delta didn't visit the forum during these days, no offence but some people were just so mean towards her. I just couldn't stand it. Glad to see that's all over now and everyone's supporting her again

I don't like to make snap judgements as I know nothing about Brian's personal life, but I can't help but think the same thing.

And really Delta hasn't been single for a very long time because after dating Blair there was a gap but then it was Mark and not long after her relationship with Brian began and then Nick. That's like a 9 or 10 year span!!! I think being single for an extended period of time will do her the world of good!! Esp in refining her choice in men

yes we did moan alot.. i never disapproved of Nick as her bf tho... i thought he was a better choice than Brian for Delta... i will admit to moaning alot last year.. but it works both ways.. maybe we were hard on her and didnt know the full story but its not a lie to say that the goalposts were repeatedly moved last year.. it was one disappointment after another.. maybe she wasnt totally to blame.. i think now Sony played a part too but the one thing that annoyed me more than anything wasnt the lack of communication.. it was the misleading information.. Delta repeatedly tweeted "soon" when asked about the album... all last year ..it was soon, soon..the album is coming mid this year.. i wouldnt even call that soon now lol.... but yes i think there were wrongs on both sides... some of us were maybe too hard on her and yes she shouldnt have misled us into thinking the album was coming soon all last year when it was not.. and if plans to release had changed, they could have been communicated better without her having to expose her personal life / issues at all...

but hey .. its in the past and it is great to have her back at last and she seems happy and ready so it prob all for the best she didnt start the era last year when she wasnt happy in herself
