Seven romped to another double-digit margin win as the Australian Open served up another thriller. The five-set match between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, which finished at 12.35am AEDT today, did very well for most of the night.
The cricket continued to rate well as Australia tried to wrap its test series against India 4-0. Nine News beat Seven News nationally for the second night in a row.
The Project hit the 500,000 mark for the first time in its new timeslot of 6pm, but Glee posted its new series low, starting at the new time of 7pm.

*Perth figures are approximate as the winner's interview was not shown and replaced by Seven News. Also, the Sydney and Melbourne figures for Unbreakable were approximate as it did not begin until 11.30pm due to late finish to the tennis coverage.

Last night's Australian Open women's singles final, which Belarussian Victoria Azarenka beat Russia's Maria Sharapova in straight sets (and claimed the world No.1 ranking in the process), was well down on last year's decider (Kim Clijsters beat Li Na in three sets) which averaged 1.677 million, but was up on 2010 when 1.128 million viewers saw Serena Williams defeating Justine Henin in three sets to defend the title she won in 2009.

Overnight audience figures for Australian Open women's singles finals in the past five years:
2008: 690,000 (Maria Sharapova defeated Ana Ivanovic 7-5, 6-3) (last women's singles final to be played in afternoon)
2009: 1,109,000 (Serena Williams defeated Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-3)
2010: 1,128,000 (Serena Williams defeated Justine Henin 6-4, 3-6, 6-2)
2011: 1,677,000 (Kim Clijsters defeated Li Na 3-6, 6-3, 6-3)
2012: 1,215,000 (Victoria Azarenka defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-0)
Sources: OzTAM, Wikipedia

While Seven still won last night comfortably, its winning share for the night was smaller than 12 months ago (34.0% primary share and 42.3% combined share) since the Azarenka-Sharakova only lasted just more than 1.5 hours.

*figures for the tennis overrun (Australian Open Day 12 night session) in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

Thanks to its coverage of the Australian Open tennis, Seven finished first in network shares, primary channels, multichannels and demographics, winning every night in every city. The tennis took nine spots in the week's top 20.
The Big Bang Theory was Nine's only entry in the top 20 (new episode at No.2 and the repeat following it at No.7) while Ten has also its first entry in the top 10 for many months with the debut episode of New Girl at No.8.

The 100th running of Australian Open tennis men's championship culminated in an epic battle between the world's top two players: defending champion Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. The final, which ran for nearly six hours (the longest Grand Slam final in history) and ended at 1:37am AEDT today, ended with Djokovic triumphant over five tough sets. The match attracted an excellent audience and another whopping audience share for Seven. The telecast pulled an average of 1.86 viewers, up 34.7% on 2011's final, but was still down on previous years when it averaged more than two million viewers:
2008: 2,346,000 (Novak Djokovic defeated Jo-Wilfred Tsonga 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6)
2009: 2,246,000 (Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2)
2010: 2,352,000 (Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6)
2011: 1,381,000 (Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray 6-4, 6-2, 6-3)
2012: 1,860,000 (Djokovic defeated Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6, 7-5)

The game peaked at 2.8 million viewers. A staggering 1.67 million viewers were still glued to Seven for the post-match presentation at 1.45am AEDT.
Seven's primary share of 41.3% was more than those of Nine and Ten combined. Seven's combined share of 45.4% was also more than those of Nine and Ten combined.
Remarkably, Ten's Super Sunday line-up held up very well against the tennis, with YTT, Modern Family and New Girl posting small increases on last week, while Homeland dropped a little.
There was little joy for Nine apart from its news winning in Sydney and Melbourne, and posting strong numbers in Perth against the tennis (Seven News did not air in Perth until 11pm local time).

The new season of My Kitchen Rules enjoyed a great start last night (it was the night's top-rating show), and combining with solid figures for the premiere of dating show Please Marry My Boy, led Seven to an easy win last night. MKR easily beat the premiere of Excess Baggage and The Biggest Loser, as well as a new episode of The Big Bang Theory (which was the leading program in 16-39, 18-49, 25-54 demographics). Even the new season of HIMYM won its new timeslot.
Despite blanket promotion, new celebrity weight loss competition program Excess Baggage only attracted a modest audience for Nine. It did beat TNL in the same timeslot (7pm-8pm). The low lead-in dragged down new episode of TBBT as it lost 300,000 viewers from last week. Breakfast show Today, with a brand new logo, graphics and studio set, beat Sunrise in Sydney and Melbourne, but still lost nationally.
Ten had a bad Monday. Apart from TBL, NCIS: LA and Hawaii Five-O lost in their new timeslots of 8.30pm and 9.30pm respectively.

Seven enjoyed another easy win as Nine's fortunes went from bad to worse. Seven dominated from 6pm onwards with five of the top 10 programs of the night (including the top four: MKR, news, TT and H&A). Even another repeat of the movie The Holiday contributed. MKR slipped a bit from Monday's premiere but still posted an impressive audience figure.
Excess Baggage lost more than 200,000 viewers from the first episode and even lost to The Biggest Loser. It was left to repeats of The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men to pick up the pieces.
Ten had three programs over 700,000 viewers: the 5pm news, TBL and NCIS repeat. The new season of Bondi Vet pulled a mediocre total.

Nine had its first nightly win since January 14, thanks to its coverage of the Twenty/20 cricket match from Sydney's ANZ Stadium, but Seven also had a good night with the audience watching MKR (which went head to head with the cricket) actually increased from Tuesday. Both MKR and the cricket were the top two programs in 16-39, 18-49, and 25-54 demographics. Three days in, Hot Seat has already opened a nice gap over DOND.
The impressive figures for MKR and the cricket largely came at Ten's expense. Although TBL went up slightly from Tuesday, TBYG posted a shocking figure for its season premiere, and The Good Wife dropped from last week.

Another impressive performance by MKR gave Seven a nice win last night, as Nine and Ten's woes continued. MKR had its first fall of the week but still attracted more than 1.4 million viewers. For the whole week, the reality cooking competition stayed above the 1.4 million mark, higher than the premiere week last year. Desperate Housewives had a soft return for its final season, but did well in 16-39 and 18-49 demographics.
Excess Baggage slumped to a new low only in its third night in, and already alarming bells are ringing at Channel Nine. The network had commissioned EB as a spoiler for The Biggest Loser, and to reinforce the message it owns the 7pm timeslot (try telling that to Seven which has been running Home and Away in the timeslot for more than 20 years). Instead, EB slumped to only 555,000, coming fourth behind H&A, TBL and ABC News. CSI saved some face for Nine by winning the 8.30pm timeslot.
Apart from TBL, Ten had little joy for the night. A Gifted Man and SVU struggled in their timeslots.
New Australian drama The Straits did OK over two hours for the ABC.

Twenty/20 cricket set up another huge win for Nine, cutting Seven's lead for the week to under 5% but Seven is still expected to win the week.
BH&G did OK over 90 minutes while H&A was hit substantially by the cricket.
The Project lost more than 70,000 viewers from last Friday while Glee slipped a little and was outrated by the repeat of the classic movie The Sound of Music.

The thrilling NRL All Stars game on the Gold Coast helped Nine securing the night. However Ten had a decent night too with The Graham Norton Show posting its highest figure on commercial TV, boosted by an unlikely lead-in in the form of TBYG encore. Graham Norton and the premiere of An Idiot Abroad: Bucket List were the top two programs in the 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54 demographics.

Having enjoyed a start to the week with the Australian Open men's final marathon between Djokovic and Nadal, and the new season of My Kitchen Rules, Seven had to withstand a late surge by Nine (led by Twenty/20 cricket and the NRL All Stars game) before claiming victory for the week.
The tennis was the week's top program with 2.046 million viewers (the late coverage pulled 1.381 million). MKR nabbed 4 of the top 6 spots, as high as 1.5m viewers.
Seven won 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54 demographics. It topped Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday with Nine winning Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Seven ranked first in all cities except Sydney, which fell to Nine.

Nine won the night thanks to its coverage of the one-day cricket match between Australia and India from the MCG, even though it was affected by rain in the afternoon. In the morning, Weekend Today got within 4,000 viewers of Weekend Sunrise. GO! won in digital channels with new US comedy Suburgatory doing quite well on debut.
Seven got mixed results with the return of its regular Sunday line-up. Mike Willesee's interview with Prime Minister Julia Gillard did not help the ratings for Sunday Night. Border Security and The Force posted average figures (The Force did very well in Perth as usual). Bones and Castle posted solid figures for their timeslots.
Ten's Super Sunday line-up held well against Nine, in fact Ten came second between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. While YTT and Homeland slipped a bit, Modern Family and New Girl were steady from last week. New Girl, Modern Family and Homeland were the top 3 programs in 16-39, 18-39 and 25-54 demographics, ahead of the cricket.

Led by MKR and Please Marry My Boy, Seven had an easy victory last night and regained the lead for the week. Excess Baggage had a small increase from Thursday but still lost to TBL. Nine obviously had lost its patience and decided to dump the program to GO! from next Monday. Sonia Kruger and David Campbell's first hosting of Morning had an average start, coming second to The Morning Show.
The thrilling NFL Super Bowl XLVI did quite well for One and Ten. The combined total of 268,000 and individual figures were both higher than last year when 98,000 people watched on One and 73,000 on Ten.

Seven demolished the opposition with MKR hitting a new season high and the repeat of the movie The Proposal surprisingly pulling more than one million viewers. But H&A dropped below the million mark and Seven News lost again in Sydney and Melbourne.
Excess Baggage plunged below the 500,000 mark to a new series low as the news came through that the troubled celebrity weight-loss contest program will be moved to GO! after tonight's episode.
There was no joy for Ten either with no program attracting 700,000 viewers after 7pm.

Despite losing 200,000 viewers from Tuesday, MKR delivered another impressive figure, and it was enough to help Seven winning the night. Another repeat of the movie Legally Blonde was not able to repeat the heroics of The Proposal on previous night.
Excess Baggage stayed above the 500,000 mark on its final night on Nine before it is bumped to GO! as of next Monday. The low figures dragged the rest of the night for Nine's main channel. The cricket did quite well for Gem, making it the most-watched digital channel of the night.
ABC's new Wednesday line-up posted softer than average figures.

Seven won the night easily thanks to another domination by MKR, which pulled 455,000 more viewers than the second-placed program (Seven News). Otherwise it was a low-rating night, with the season premiere of Grey's Anatomy the most-watched program after 8.30pm.
It was a bad night with The Project dropping below the 400,000 mark to its lowest audience ever. A Gifted Man also posted a new season low, dragging down SVU with it. So much so A Gifted Man has been moved to 10.30pm Thursday as of next week.

Nine won its second night of the week thanks to one-day cricket, but its share could have been bigger if the match was shown in full in Perth.
BH&G had a nice rise on last week's season premiere, adding 100,000 viewers.
Ten had a shocking night with both Glee and the premiere movie 500 Days of Summer both flopping.

Nine kicked off the 2012 ratings season with a narrow win (it beat Seven by the same margin of 0.5% in both primary channels and combined shares). The one-day cricket match between Australia and India from Adelaide did very well, boosting the figures for Nine News.
Ten's Super Sunday line-up faced its first real big test with mixed results. While Modern Family and New Girl held their own, YTT and double episodes of Homeland dropped from last week to new season lows. YTT lost nearly 300,000 viewers to come third in its timeslot, while Homeland's second episode was locked in a tight tussle with Castle.
Apart from average figures for the 6pm news, Seven had a good night. Sunday Night had a substantial increase with viewers attracted to the story on music guru Ian "Molly" Meldrum who is in rehabilitation following a fall at his Melbourne home last December, which nearly caused his death. BS and The Force both went up but Bones was down.
Grand Designs and new episodes of Midsomer Murders were the ABC's most-watched programs last night although MM was down on last year when it pulled more than 1 million viewers.

New US drama Revenge, starring Emily VanCamp (Brothers & Sisters) and Madeleine Stowe, launched to a massive audience of more than 2 million last night. It was the highest premiere for an overseas program since Downton Abbey last year:

Most watched overseas program premieres on Australian TV
Desperate Housewives (2.48 million; Seven, 2005)
Jesse (2.46 million; Nine, 1999)
Veronica's Closet (2.45 million; Nine, 1998)
Dinosaurs (2.39 million; Seven, 1992)
Lost (2.34 million; Seven, 2005)
Suddenly Susan (2.14 million; Nine, 1997)
Friends (2.12 million; Seven, 1996)
Heroes (2.10 million; Seven, 2007)
Revenge (2.06 million; Seven, 2012)
Ugly Betty (2.05 million; Seven, 2007)
Downton Abbey (2.04 million*; Seven, 2011)

The Revenge pilot episode, directed by Australia's Phillip Noyce, peaked at 2.424 million viewers and attracted over a million viewers in both the 18-49 and 25-54 age brackets. 814,000 viewers watched in the regional markets.
My Kitchen Rules, which aired before Revenge, set a new season high as South Australians Nic and Rocco posted a record group stage score of 95 for their three-course effort. Seven won the night by a big margin as the result of excellent ratings for both MKR and Revenge. HIMYM did not benefit from the massive lead-in from Revenge however.
Nine had a mixed bag last night. Re-launched with new graphics and new studio, A Current Affair with Tracy Grimshaw returning to Sydney to host suffered one of its heaviest defeats in recent months, losing to Today Tonight by more than 410,000 viewers. The double new episodes of The Big Bang Theory did very well against the might of MKR. The 7pm repeat of TBBT did much better than Excess Baggage in the same timeslot from a week ago. New US drama Alcatraz, launched on the same night and same timeslot as Revenge, did OK on debut with the second episode at 9.30pm winning its timeslot and retaining most of its audience from the 8.30pm premiere.
Ten came fourth for the night, posting a low audience share of 10.6% for the main channel (16.1% when shares from One and Eleven were added). It had only two programs in the top 20 (TBL and the 5pm news). NCIS: LA and Hawaii Five-O were obliterated by their rivals on Seven, Nine and the ABC. The last ever episode of Smallville on Eleven had less than 69,000 tuning in.

MKR grabbed a massive audience last night as 1.933 million people tuned in to see Queensland gay couple Peter and Gary copped huge backlash in their instant restaurant, including a main course which took three hours to prepare and cook. It is easily the most-watched regular episode in the series' short history, and the second-most watched episode in series history (including finals), surpassing the audience figure of 1.719 million for season two grand final on April 13 last year (when Bella and Sammy won) but fell just short of 2.02 million for the winner's announcement. It was the most-watched program in 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54 demographics, and single handedly helped Seven winning the night as its rivals floundered.
Please Marry My Boy dropped from its previous outing last Monday night, but stayed above the one million mark and won its timeslot.
Nine, Ten and the ABC never stood a chance against Seven's might. The season 2 premiere of BBC series Sherlock did OK for Nine but was much lower than the 1.3-1.4 million it attracted for season one last year. Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation (Ten) and Adam Hills in Gordon Street Tonight (ABC) both flopped.
