The Amazing Race, the Emmy-award winning reality travel competition series, is back for another year. 2011 marks 10 years since the series began with teams of 2 people travelling around the world, completing various difficult tasks, surviving cultural barriers and eliminations along the way, in order to win the US$1 million prize.
For the 19th season, teams visited Indonesia, Malawi, Belgium and Denmark for the first time. Two new game elements were also introduced. Leg 1 introduced the "Hazard," a penalty one team will incur for being the last team to finish the starting-line task. According to host Phil Keoghan, the Hazard was added to "test people's mental strength out of the gate", and claims that it has a "rolling effect" throughout the rest of the Race. Leg 2 will be the first in which two teams will be eliminated at the Pit Stop (in Season 10, two teams were eliminated during the first leg, but not both at the Pit Stop).
The cast includes former Survivor winners and dating couple Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca; Zac Sunderland, the first person under 18 to sail solo around the world, and his father Laurence; retired NFL player Marcus Pollard with his wife Amani; and former Olympic snowboarders Andy Finch and Tommy Czeschin.
The 19th season of TAR will be fasttracked by Channel Seven and shown on 9.30pm Thursdays from October 6, starting with the first two legs of the race. From October 13 onwards, each episode will be aired four days after the US. The program will be shown on Seven and its regional affiliates Prime, Southern Cross and Golden West Network.

What a start to season 19! Kaylani lost her passport at the service station and could have been eliminated with Lisa before they even left Los Angeles, if not for two guys (who were helping directions with the other team) who found the passport and tweeted about it. According to reports, the crew following Kaylani and Lisa saw the passport but could not tell the girls, instead they notified Phil and the crew at the starting point as they got ready to go to the airport for the elimination.
The bit at the end of the second leg in Indonesia left a sour taste in my mouth. It was fine for the teams to donate the money they earned from the detours to the orphanage, but to force them to give all the money in their possessions (including US dollar bills) before they could check in at the Pit Stop was really, really unfair. It was only the second leg so the contestants would have had only a few hundred dollars in their wallets, but they should not donate the money against their will. Without the money, they could not eat or rent accommodation during the mandatory rest period before the start of the next leg? Had the producers thought about that?

This season there will be consecutive Double U-Turns. The first Double U-Turn appeared on the shores of Lake Malawi in episode 7 with the second to appear in episode 8 in Denmark. And it has gone hi-tech too: instead of sticking paper photos on the stand, a team simply picks another team on the smaller tablet and the U-turned team will be displayed on the larger tablet above.
