Sitting On Top Of The World
The first page of the new chapter. The wait is over. Here it is, the glistening brand new single from Delta Goodrem – “Sitting On Top Of The World”.
“Sitting On Top Of The World” finds Delta Goodrem in an exuberant mood and singing about it at the top of her lungs, expressing the full spectrum of her dynamic vocal range.
“Sitting On Top Of The World” is what Delta calls a sunshine song, a bright, upbeat, unabashed call-out to the universe, about embracing life in these moments when everything feels just right.
“It’s about my connection to the world,” Delta explains. “The lyric is saying: ‘Waiting. Watching. Listening to every little sign I see.’ That’s thinking about the path that we’ve been on and about having patience. There’s another line that says, ‘You know when it’s right when all the stars align.’ It’s about watching for the signs, listening, and then when you’re sitting in the right spot in the light, you’re sitting on top of the world. I think a lot of people can relate to that.”
Delta’s songs have always reflected exactly where the singer finds herself in her own life, a window into the artist’s heart and soul, both for her fans, but also herself. And “Sitting On Top Of The World” sees Delta in as happy a place as she can ever remember.
“I really am in the best spot I’ve been in for so long,” she says. “Moving forward, onwards and upwards in my life. I feel like I’m a very free person again, more free in myself and in my world and in my place in the world. And sitting on top of the world, it’s saying, ‘Hang on, I’ve made good decisions in my life to go forward to a good place. And I feel like this is where I should be.’”
Delta co-wrote and co-produced “Sitting On Top Of The World” with her old friend and long-time collaborator, the Grammy Award-winning producer John Shanks. “I’ve been working with John Shanks since I was about 16-years-old,” says the now 27-year-old Delta. “We’ve always written intense, dark, dramatic, big songs. This time we said: “We need to write a sunshine song!’”
Alongside his work with Delta, John Shanks is credited with helping produce over 60 chart-topping singles around the world and is one of the most successful music producers of the modern era, creating hits with superstars as diverse Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Kelly Clarkson, Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi and Westlife. The pair wrote and recorded “Sitting On Top Of The World” in John’s own Henson Studio in Los Angeles, the very same room where, a generation ago, Carole King recorded her legendary Tapestry album and Joni Mitchell made Blue.
“Sitting On Top Of The World” is, of course, the first sample from Delta’s forthcoming new album, her fourth studio album and the long-awaited follow-up to 2007′s multi-platinum chart-topper, Delta. More details about the new record will follow shortly.
Whilst almost five years have come and gone between albums, Delta has hardly been idle in either her life or career. On the back of her last album’s success, Delta performed her sell-out “Believe Again” concert tour across Australia in 2009.
Delta has since relocated to Los Angeles, where she undertook a national tour alongside the legendary Andre Bocelli at the great singer’s personal request, and has also written material for other artists, including a celebrated duet with Michael Bolton, “I’m Not Ready”. Along the way, Delta has also made her arrival on the American music scene felt, including a much-heralded stunning appearance on America’s Dancing With The Stars, watched by over 20 million people. Most recently, Delta has been back here in Australia, working on her role as a judge on The Voice Australia, which is set to premiere on Channel Nine on April 15.
In the meantime, however, Delta has focused on penning, collecting and recording songs for her eagerly-anticipated fourth full-length studio album. “I’ve written so many songs that have stood the test in this last year or two,” she says. “I’m a totally different person to what I was when I made the last album.
“When you’re in the right place in life, everything moves smoothly. When you’re in the wrong place, every thing is hard work. I feel like I’m in the right place and this song is guiding me into my next place as well.”
Three number one albums so far, countless number one and top 10 singles, a multi-ARIA Award winner, so many classic songs and over 6 million units sold worldwide – more than any other Australian artist in the past decade. Delta Goodrem’s phenomenal career so far speaks for itself.
And now, here is the first page of the new chapter: “Sitting On Top Of The World”. It sounds so alive, a true celebration of life. It’s the sound of Delta Goodrem, happier than she’s ever been.
