Check out our exclusive interview with Brian on Brian Daily!
This interview was taken in 2010.
Is there a particular person, place, culturally significant moment or period of time in your life that you constantly draw inspiration from? and if so, do you believe its fair to say that it has ‘shaped your musical style’?
No one moment has done that – Every moment is significant and every moment has added colour to my music and who I am as a person and an artist. You’ve told us that the new album will be “earthy” and “stripped back”. Could you tell us a bit more about it without giving too much more away?
It will be – like the other albums – exactly where i am at right now in life! :) New perspectives, new ideas. New sounds that have inspired me. I write the way I write. There will always be a thread between them but hopefully ever evolving.Do you ever feel the pressure to conform to the type of music that is currently popular in order to be successful?
No, I have always felt on my own path and my own journey – I have been like that since i was born – even at school. I understand the pressure and I’m aware of it but no it wouldn’t be right for me to write like that. It has to be honest and from the heart. Every artist is different and that’s what makes it so fun and expressive.
What’s been the hardest part about breaking the US Market?
It’s such a big country, it just takes time!If you had to pick one person to collaborate with (one you haven’t collaborated with before), who would it be ? And why would you collaborate with them?
There’s just way too many to name! Wouldn’t know where to start hehe…Has your approach to songwriting changed ever since your first album INNOCENT EYES? Do you write songs now imagining them on the radio, or do you just write whatever comes to mind and then hope the public likes it?
No I still write the same. I write songs to tell a story for people to relate to in their own world. I write songs to connect to the human spirit. I write them from a place of freedom and the only thing I imagine is standing there on stage singing them for you!As with the MISTAKEN IDENTITY and DELTA eras, fans had to wait until the end of the era for an official tour. Have you considered the possibility of a small scale tour of Australia on initial release of the album with a full on tour later on?
Due to circumstances of my journey, the touring process got off course so it hasn’t had a consistent flow, but from now on I hope we have caught up and can enjoy a lot more sing alongs sooner – which means you MUST learn all the lyrics to new songs so you can join in hehe!
What is the proudest moment of your career so far and why?
I still have to say the Arias 2003. That moment in time was obviously a magical moment that I bottle up in my head and feel utterly grateful and appreciative of the love that night for my music and I.Thanks, Delta!
